Summary
Overview: Save a credit or debit card in Billing so you can pay for your plan, add-ons and credits without typing your card details every time. On the Payment Methods tab you can add a card, see which card is your default, see what each card pays for, and remove cards you no longer use.
Prerequisites:
- A credit or debit card.
- Access to Billing. Store owners always have it. Team members need Billing access in their user permissions.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Open Payment Methods
- Click your name or profile picture at the top right of the dashboard.
- Click Billing.
- Click the Payment Methods tab.
Your cards are listed under Saved Credit Cards. Each card shows:
- a Stripe or Xendit label (the payment service that stores the card)
- the last four digits of the card number
- Default Credit Card, if it is your default card
- Active Subscription(s) with a number, or No active subscriptions
To show only some cards, use the Payment gateway filter (All gateways, Xendit or Stripe). To reload the list, click Refresh.
Step 2: Add a card
- Click Add a New Credit Card.
- In the Choose payment method window, click Add via Stripe.
- In the Add Credit Card window, enter your card details in the secure card form.
- Click Save Card. If your bank asks you to verify the card, follow its prompts.
- The window closes and the new card appears in your list.
New cards are saved through Stripe. If you click Add via Xendit, a message tells you to use the Stripe card form instead. Click Close and choose Add via Stripe.
Step 3: Check your default card
Your default card is marked Default Credit Card. Shipping Credits top-ups are charged to it.
- The first card you save becomes your default.
- When you pay for a plan with a different saved card, that card becomes your default.
- When you remove your default card, another saved card becomes the default.
- For older cards marked Xendit, you can also click the ⋮ menu on the card and choose Make Default Credit Card.
Step 4: See what a card pays for
- On a card, click the Active Subscription(s) link.
- A window lists the subscriptions paid with this card: your Prosperna plan and any add-on apps.
- To see more, click Actions next to an item, then View Information or View Invoice.
If a card shows Scheduled Plan Change, you have a plan change waiting to start. The card is kept for that change and will be charged for the new plan when it starts.
Step 5: Remove a card
- On the card, click the ⋮ menu and choose Remove.
- What you see next depends on the card:
- The card pays for nothing: a confirmation asks Are you sure you want to remove this card? Click Remove.
- The card pays for a plan that is still running (Stripe cards):
- To keep your plan renewing, choose a card under Move the subscription to, then click Move and remove card.
- To stop renewing, leave Do not move it, stop renewing instead selected and click Remove card.
- You already cancelled your plan: the window says your plan is already set to end on a date. Removing the card won't change that date. Click Remove card.
- Older Xendit cards: if the card is your default, choose a new default card under Select a card to set as your Default Credit Card. If it pays for subscriptions, choose the card that will take them over. Click Confirm, then Remove.
What happens if you remove the only card that pays for your plan? You keep everything you have paid for. Your plan stays active until the end of the current billing period. After that it ends, and your store is suspended until you subscribe again (see What Happens When Your Free Trial Ends). You can add a card and subscribe again any time before then. Add-ons billed to that card are cancelled straight away, because add-ons don't run to the end of a billing period.
Verify It Worked
Success criteria:
- Added a card: the card appears under Saved Credit Cards with a Stripe label and its last four digits.
- Removed a card: the card is gone from the list, and a message confirms it. For example: Credit card removed, Card removed. Your subscription now renews on the card you chose., or Card removed. Your plan stays active until (date) and will not renew after that.
Troubleshooting
Common errors
- "This store uses Stripe for saved cards. Use the Stripe card form in Billing (same as checkout) to add a card, or switch the billing provider to Xendit if you need the Xendit card flow.": you chose Add via Xendit. Click Close, then add the card with Add via Stripe.
- An error appears in red inside the Add Credit Card window: the card was not saved. Check the card number, expiry date and security code, or try a different card.
- Add via Stripe is greyed out and shows "Store not ready": your store details haven't finished loading. Refresh the page and try again.
- "This credit card still has active subscriptions associated with it and you have no other cards to transfer these subscriptions to. Please manually cancel all the active subscriptions associated with this credit card to remove this credit card from your account.": this appears for older Xendit cards. Add another card first, or cancel the subscriptions, then remove the card.
- "We could not check what this card is paying for. Please try again in a moment.": the card was not removed. Wait a moment and try again.
- "Failed to remove card": the card was not removed. Click Refresh and try again.
- A card you just added is not in the list: click Refresh.
Limitations & considerations
- You can't edit a saved card. To change the expiry date or number, add the new card and then remove the old one.
- For cards marked Stripe, you can't choose the default card yourself. It follows the rules in Step 3.
- When you move a subscription, you can only move it to another card with the same label (Stripe to Stripe, or Xendit to Xendit).
- Removing a card that pays for your plan without moving the subscription stops your plan from renewing. Add-ons on that card end immediately.
- Plans and credits are charged in US dollars.
