Summary

Overview: A look is a saved copy of your Colors & Styles settings: your colors, fonts, text styles, button style and corner shape. Your store keeps one look as the store default, which styles your whole store, and you can save up to 10 looks in total. You can then show a single page, your menu or your footer in a different look without changing the rest of your store.

Prerequisites:

  • A store on the Launch, Grow, Scale or free trial plan.
  • Store owner access, or a team member with Store settings & administration access.
  • Your Colors & Styles settings saved at least once. See How to Customize Your Store's Design.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Find your looks

The Look drop-down sits above the Colors & Styles form, in both places that form appears:

In AI Studio

  1. In the sidebar, click Max AI, then AI Studio.
  2. Click Colors & Styles.
  3. The Look drop-down is at the top, with an Actions button beside it.

In the page builder

  1. Open a page in the Max AI page builder. See How to Build Pages with Max AI.
  2. In the message-box menu next to Visual Editor, click Design Settings.
  3. The Look drop-down is at the top of the panel.

Your current look is marked (store default) after its name. Choosing a different look in the drop-down loads it into the form below, so the form always edits the look you have chosen.

Underneath the drop-down, a line tells you what a save will do:

  • This is your store default. Saving changes your whole store.
  • Saving changes this look only. Pages that use it show the change.

Step 2: Save a new look

  1. In the Look drop-down, choose the look you want to start from.
  2. Click Actions, then Duplicate.
  3. In Name the new look, type a name (up to 60 characters). It's filled in for you as <the look's name> copy.
  4. Click Duplicate.

The new look is selected in the drop-down. Change the colors, fonts and button settings in the form, then click Save. Only this look changes — your store default is untouched.

Step 3: Rename, replace or delete a look

Choose the look in the drop-down, then click Actions:

Action What it does
Set as store default Makes this look style your whole store. Greyed out when the look is already the store default.
Rename Opens Rename look. Type the new name and click Rename.
Duplicate Saves a copy under a new name (Step 2).
Delete Asks Delete the look ""? This cannot be undone. Click Delete to confirm. Greyed out for the store default.

When you click Set as store default, you see This look is now your store default. After a delete, you see Look deleted.

Step 4: Use a look on one page, your menu or your footer

These switches are in the page builder only.

  1. Open the page in the Max AI page builder, then open Design Settings from the message-box menu.

  2. Choose the look you want in the Look drop-down.

  3. Under Use this look on, turn on the switch for the part you want:

    • This page — only the page you have open.
    • Menu — your store's menu, on every page.
    • Footer — your store's footer, on every page.

Each switch shows the name of the look that part uses right now.

  4. The preview repaints straight away so you can see it, but nothing is kept yet. The panel says Not applied yet. (or Applying changes the menu or footer on every page. when a menu or footer switch is waiting).

  5. Click Apply to keep it.

You see The page now uses this look. for a page, and The menu and footer looks are saved. for the menu or footer.

To put a part back, turn its switch off. It returns to the look it was saved with, or to your store default.

Step 5: Change a page's look from the Pages list

  1. In the sidebar, click Page Builder, then All Pages.
  2. A page that uses a look other than the store default shows a Look: badge next to its title.
  3. Click ... on the page's row, then Change look.
  4. In Look for "", choose a look, or choose Store default () to put the page back.
  5. Click Save.

The window reminds you: The page shows in this look on your storefront. The menu and footer stay on the store default.

Verify It Worked

Success criteria:

  • The look you saved appears in the Look drop-down, and the one marked (store default) is the one styling your store.
  • After Apply, you see The page now uses this look. or The menu and footer looks are saved.
  • In All Pages, a pinned page shows its Look: badge.
  • Open your online store: the page, menu or footer shows in the look you chose.

Troubleshooting

Common errors

  • "A store can keep up to 10 looks. Delete one to add another.": you already have 10 looks. Delete one you no longer use, then try again.
  • "A look named "" already exists. Choose another name.": pick a different name.
  • "This look is the store default. Make another look the store default before deleting it.": choose another look and click Set as store default first, then delete this one.
  • "This look is used by: . Switch those pages to another look first.": open each page listed and move it to another look (Step 5), then delete the look.
  • "Save your Design Settings once before choosing a look for the menu or footer.": open Colors & Styles, click Save, then try again.
  • "Save the page first to pin a look.": the This page switch needs a saved page. Save or publish the page, then turn the switch on.
  • "This look no longer exists.": someone deleted it. Refresh the page and choose another look.
  • "We could not check which pages use this look. Please try again in a moment.": wait a moment and try the delete again.
  • "Could not change the look of the menu or footer." or "Could not change the look of this page.": nothing was kept. Click Apply again.

Limitations & considerations

  • A store can keep up to 10 looks, including the store default. Look names can be up to 60 characters.
  • The store default cannot be deleted, and a look cannot be deleted while a page, your menu or your footer uses it.
  • Saving while the store default is selected changes your whole store. Saving any other look changes only the pages that use it.
  • Your menu and footer are the same on every page, so a look applied to them shows on every page.
  • A page built from an imported HTML file is saved with its own look, named import. See How to Build Pages with Max AI.
