Summary

Overview: Max AI's Builder designs and builds the pages of your online store. Describe the page you want and Max builds it, or start from a web address, an HTML file, or a blank page you fill yourself. You see a live preview beside the chat, and nothing goes live until you publish.

Prerequisites:

  • A store on the Launch, Grow, Scale or Premium Trial plan.
  • AI credits if you want Max to build, clone or import a page. Building a blank page by hand doesn't use AI credits. See How to Buy AI Credits.
  • Optional: set your colors and fonts first so new pages match your brand. See How to Customize Your Store's Design.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Open Max's Builder

  1. In the sidebar, click Max AI.
  2. On Hi, I'm Max, click the Builder card, then Start chatting.
    • Already in a chat? Use the agent switcher at the bottom left of the message box and pick Builder.
  3. You can also start from Page Builder → All Pages: click Add Page. On stores created on or after May 28, 2026, this opens Max's Builder and sends Help me create a new page for my online store. for you.

Step 2: Choose how to start

Under Tools & Capabilities, pick a card:

Card What it does
Start from Scratch Describe it and Max builds it. Fills the message box with a request. Send it, and Max asks you about the page one question at a time before it builds.
Home Page Build a homepage structure tailored to your store. Fills in a request for a homepage with a hero, featured products, trust signals, testimonials and a closing call to action.
About Page Draft your brand story and value proposition.
FAQ Page Answer common questions to reduce buyer hesitation.
Clone from URL Rebuild any page from a link. See Step 3.
Import HTML Turn an HTML file into a page. See Step 3.
Build it Yourself Drag and drop it yourself. No AI credits needed. See Step 3.
Edit a Page Update an existing page. See Step 6.
Edit Menu and Footer Change what wraps every page of your store. See How to Set Up Your Store Menu and Footer.

The prompt cards (Start from Scratch, Home Page, About Page, FAQ Page) only fill the message box. You can change the text before you send it. You can also just type your own request, for example Build a contact page with a form.

Step 3: Clone, import or start a blank page (optional)

You can open these from the cards above or from the + button in the message box (Clone, Import, New Blank Page).

Clone a page from a URL (uses AI credits)

  1. Click Clone from URL (or + → Clone).
  2. Paste the page's address. It must start with https://.
  3. Click Clone page. If a page is already open in the builder, you see You have a page open in the editor. Cloning will replace your current work. Click Continue to clone to go ahead.

Import an HTML file (uses AI credits)

  1. Click Import HTML (or + → Import).
  2. Pick an HTML file from your media library, or click Upload HTML file to add one (.html or .htm, up to 25 MB).
  3. Wait for the check. When you see Ready to import., click Import.

Max saves the imported file's design as a look of its own, named <page title> import, and uses it on that page only — the rest of your store keeps its current design. Max tells you: I saved this page's design as the look '<name>' and used it on this page. Make it the store's look from Colors & Styles if you want every page to match. If your store already has 10 looks, Max says Your store already has 10 looks, so I couldn't save this design as a new one. See How to Save and Reuse Store Looks.

Build a blank page by hand (no AI credits)

  1. Click Build it Yourself (or + → New Blank Page).
  2. In New blank page, type a page name: 1 to 60 letters, numbers, spaces or hyphens. The name is used for the page's web address.
  3. Click Create page. An empty page opens. Add sections and elements from the Insert tab. See How to Edit a Page in the Visual Editor.

Step 4: Work with Max and review the preview

  1. Answer Max's questions and send any changes you want, for example Make the header background darker or Add a testimonials section.
  2. The page appears in the preview on the right. Switch views with the Desktop View, Tablet View and Mobile View buttons at the top of the preview.
    • In Desktop View the preview fills the screen and the chat floats over it as a Chat with Max card. Drag the card by its header. Click the minus button (Minimize) to shrink it to its header, and the plus button (Restore chat) to open it again. A dot on the header means Max has new activity. Click Back to split view to return to the side-by-side layout.
    • Pressing Esc outside the chat card also leaves Desktop View. Closing the preview returns you to the side-by-side layout.
  3. When Max changes a page that's already open, it shows an approval card pinned just above the message box, titled for example Change 3 things on Home. Each change is listed in plain words (Main heading: Welcome to our store → Spring Sale) with a tick box, and all of them start ticked:
    • Untick a change to leave it out, or click Decline all to turn them all down.
    • Click Approve all N to apply everything, or Approve N of N when you've unticked some. Untick them all and the button reads Pick a change until you tick one again.
    • The card says Nothing is saved until you publish. and Max makes more page edits once you answer. Where Max asked, the chat keeps the line Waiting for your answer below, and the answer afterwards (You approved · Change 3 things on Home · 10:42).
    • With the preview open the chat column is narrow, so the card folds to one line with a Review button that opens the list.
  4. To change text, images, colors or layout yourself, open the Visual Editor. See How to Edit a Page in the Visual Editor.
  5. To try your store's colors, fonts and buttons on this page before you save them, click Design Settings in the same message-box menu as Visual Editor (Change your store colors, fonts and buttons and see them on this page before you save.). It's greyed out while the page is saving or publishing. See How to Customize Your Store's Design.

Step 4b: Look at the page's code (store owner only)

The store owner sees one more icon next to the view buttons at the top of the preview: Page Code (hover over it to see its name). It isn't shown in the Menu and Footer editor.

  1. Click the Page Code icon. You see What this page holds, as saved. Read only. You can't change the code here.
  2. Use the links at the top to jump to Theme, Menu, Page or Footer.
    • Menu and Footer are shared by every page. Change them in the Menu and Footer editor.
    • Page is this page only. It lists its Styles and scripts and its Markup.
  3. Each style or script says where it came from, for example Added by Max AI. Your page needs it to work. or Part of a Custom HTML block.
  4. To get rid of a style or script on the page, click Ask Max AI to remove this. The request is added to the message box. Send it, then review Max's change as usual. This button appears only in the Page section, not for menu, footer or theme code, and not for code Max added that your page needs.
  5. To go back to the preview, click Desktop View, Tablet View or Mobile View.

Step 5: Save or publish

  1. At the top right of the preview, click Save to open the save menu. Hover over the ? next to an option to see what it does:
    • Publish: your page goes live and stays open, so you can keep editing.
    • Publish and close preview: your page goes live and the chat lets go of the page, so you can rename or edit it from the Pages list right away. The chat stays open.
    • Save Draft: saves your changes without going live. The page stays open.
    • Save Draft and close preview: saves without going live and lets go of the page.
  2. The chat shows Published with a link to the live page, or Saved page-address as a draft.
  3. To leave without saving, click Close (it reads Discard while you have unsaved changes).

A small dot next to the version number means the page has unsaved changes.

Step 6: Edit a page you already have

  1. On the Builder's start screen, click Edit a Page. Or, in Page Builder → All Pages, click the ... on a page's row and choose Edit.
  2. In Edit a page, search or filter by All, Published or Unpublished, then click the page.
  3. The page opens in the preview. Ask Max for changes or use the Visual Editor, then save as in Step 5.

If the page was built with the old classic editor, you see a message that it was built with the classic editor. Click Migrate to create a new copy that Max can edit. Your current page stays exactly as it is. Older pages can also offer Open classic editor.

Step 7: Your home page

  • To have Max build your home page, use the Home Page card.
  • Your store's home page is marked with a house icon in All Pages.
  • To choose which page is your home page, go to Page Builder → Design Settings and open the Home Page tab. See How to Customize Your Store's Design.
  • You can also just ask Max, from the main chat or from inside the builder, for example make this page my homepage. Max shows an approval card above the message box, headed Needs your approval and asking Make this page your homepage?, with a Setting / Now / New table naming the current and the new home page. Click Approve to switch it, or Decline to leave it alone.
  • Max only offers the card for a published page. If the page isn't published yet, Max says <name> is not published yet, and only a published page can be your homepage. Publish it first, then ask me again. If the page can't be a home page, Max says <name> can't be your homepage. Only Home, Products or one of your own pages can be. If Max can't find the page you named, it lists up to ten pages that could be your home page and asks which one you meant.
  • To put a page's design onto your Home page, use Use as a default page… in All Pages. See How to Manage Your Pages.

Verify It Worked

Success criteria:

  • The chat shows Published with a link to your page. Click it to see the live page.
  • In Page Builder → All Pages, the page shows the status Published (or Unpublished if you saved a draft).
  • The version number next to the preview (for example v3) goes up as you make changes.

Troubleshooting

Common errors

  • Clone, Import and New Blank Page are greyed out: Unavailable while a page is open or rendering in the Page Builder. Publish, save, or discard it first.
  • "Enter a valid https:// URL": the address you pasted to clone isn't a full https:// link.
  • "This file can't be imported.": the HTML file can't be rebuilt as a page. The message may give the reason. Try another file.
  • "We couldn't verify this file.": click Try again.
  • "The file must be 25 MB or smaller.": choose a smaller HTML file.
  • "Use 1-60 letters, digits, spaces, or hyphens": remove other characters from the blank page's name.
  • Publish or Save Draft is greyed out: hover over it. Nothing to publish means this version is already live. Nothing to save means nothing changed since you opened or last saved the page.
  • Page open in another conversation: the page is open in another Max chat. Use the link in the message to go to that chat, then publish, save or close the page there.
  • Page is open in Max AI: click Go to that conversation. Finish or close the page there and it is free to open here.
  • This page is open in [app name]: the page is open through a connected app such as Claude or ChatGPT, so there is no conversation to go to. The message says when the page last changed, or how long the app has been idle. As the store owner, click Take over to end the app's session and open the page here; the app is told the next time it calls. If the app has work it never saved, the button reads Discard [app name]'s changes and take over and a warning says those changes are lost — everything the app saved stays. Click Cancel to change nothing. Team members see the same facts without the button: Only the store owner can take this page over. See How to Connect Your Store to Claude and ChatGPT.
  • A note saying the menu or footer changed: your menu and footer are shared by every page, so someone else (another tab, another chat, a page publish or a connected app) changed them while your page was open. The builder swaps only that part of the preview and tells you who changed what and when, for example Claude saved a draft of the menu (v1.1) at 10:05 AM. You're seeing it here. Only the menu changed; your page edits stay. Nothing you did to the page itself is touched.
  • A new menu was just saved (or published), or The menu was just changed: the same thing happened while you had unsaved changes to the menu or footer on this page. Click Keep my changes to carry on with yours, or Use the new menu to take theirs and drop your unsaved changes to that part only. See How to Set Up Your Store Menu and Footer.
  • Unsaved Changes when you open another page: choose Publish, Save Draft, Discard Changes or Cancel.
  • "This page has no saved content yet. Open it in the Max AI Page Builder and save your changes there first.": you tried to publish a Max page from All Pages before saving it in Max. Open it in Max and click Save → Save Draft first.

Limitations & considerations

  • Max builds, clones and imports use AI credits. Building by hand with New Blank Page doesn't.
  • Clone works only with public https:// pages.
  • Only one page can be open in the builder at a time.
  • A page can be open in only one Max chat at a time. A connected app such as Claude or ChatGPT can hold a page the same way; only the store owner can take it back.
  • Checkout, cart, the Thank you page after paying, and error pages can't be edited. Your Inquiry Thank You page can: it is the page shoppers land on after sending a contact or inquiry form, and you can ask Max to change it like any other page. See How to Manage Your Pages.
  • Your menu and footer belong to the whole store, not to one page. A change anyone makes to them reaches every open builder straight away, and every version is kept. See How to Set Up Your Store Menu and Footer.
  • Publishing from Max makes the page live right away. Drafts aren't visible to your customers.
