| Feature Availability | User Permissions | Time to Complete | Skill Level |

| Philippine and US stores on Launch, Grow, Scale and the free trial | Store owner, or a team member with Store settings & administration access | About 5 minutes | Beginner |
Summary
Overview: Two switches decide how shoppers check out on your storefront. Customer Accounts lets shoppers create an account and log in, so they can see their orders under My Orders. Guest Checkout lets shoppers buy without an account. Both are on for new stores.
Prerequisites:
- A store on Launch, Grow, Scale or the free trial.
- Store owner access, or a team member with Store settings & administration access.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Turn customer accounts on or off
- In the sidebar, click Settings, then Store.
- Click Customer Accounts on the left.
- Use the Enable customer login and registration switch:
- On: shoppers can create an account and log in on your storefront.
- Off: "When disabled, shoppers cannot create an account or sign in on your storefront. Account pages are hidden and checkout continues as guest."
The change saves right away. You see Customer account settings successfully updated.
Step 2: Turn guest checkout on or off
- In the sidebar, click Settings, then Shipping.
- At the top, next to Guest Checkout ("Enable your customers to checkout without creating an account."), use the switch.
The change saves right away. You see Successfully updated shipping settings.
Step 3: Choose the combination you want
| Customer accounts | Guest Checkout | What shoppers see |
|---|---|---|
| On | On | Shoppers can log in or check out as a guest. Checkout shows Already have an account? Login. |
| On | Off | Shoppers must log in or create an account before they check out. At checkout they see Login or Create an Account with Create an Account and Log In. |
| Off | On or Off | No account pages or login links. Every shopper checks out as a guest. |
When customer accounts are off, the Guest Checkout switch has no effect. It keeps its setting, so it applies again if you turn accounts back on.
Step 4: Know what account holders see
Shoppers who log in to your storefront have an account area with My Profile, My Orders and My Product Reviews. Under My Orders they can see their orders.
Verify It Worked
Success criteria:
- You see Customer account settings successfully updated. or Successfully updated shipping settings.
- With accounts off: your storefront shows no account or login links, and visiting an account page takes the shopper to your store's homepage.
- With accounts on and Guest Checkout off: a shopper who isn't logged in sees Login or Create an Account when they try to check out.
Troubleshooting
Common errors
- "Failed to update customer account settings.": the change didn't save. Refresh the page and try the switch again.
- Shoppers can't check out without logging in: Guest Checkout is off while customer accounts are on. Switch Guest Checkout on in Settings → Shipping, or switch customer accounts off.
- A shopper can't find the login page: customer accounts are off. Any account page link redirects to your homepage.
Limitations & considerations
- Turning customer accounts off doesn't delete any shopper accounts. Turning it back on restores the account pages as they were.
- You can always create orders for guests yourself. See How to Create an Order for a Customer.
