Summary

Overview: Your menu (navigation bar) and footer wrap every page of your online store. You build and edit them with Max AI in the Menu and Footer editor: let Max create them for you, then change links and styles yourself. Template Library lists your menu and footer templates. Stores created before May 28, 2026 also have the older Menu Builder, which you can convert to a Max AI menu.

Prerequisites:

  • A store on the Launch, Grow, Scale or Premium Trial plan.
  • AI credits if you want Max to build or convert your menu or footer. See How to Buy AI Credits.
  • For the best result, set up your colors, fonts and logo first. See How to Customize Your Store's Design.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Open the Menu and Footer editor

  1. In the sidebar, click Max AI, then choose Builder.
  2. Click the Edit Menu and Footer card (Change what wraps every page of your store.).
  3. The preview opens with the title Menu and Footer and shows your current menu and footer.
  4. Above the preview, a line says which version each part is on, who saved or published it and when, for example Menu v1.2 draft by Claude at 10:05 AM · Footer v2.0 published by Max AI (with the Home page) at 9:40 AM. The publisher is the person, page or connected app that wrote it, or Someone when Prosperna can't tell.

You can also get here from Page Builder → Template Library (Edit on a template Max built) or from the Edit in Max Builder button in Menu Builder.

Step 2: Create a menu and footer with Max

If your store has no Max AI menu or footer yet, the editor shows Your store has no Max AI menu and footer yet. (or just the menu, or just the footer).

  1. Click Create with Max AI.
  2. In Generate with Max AI, read the note. Uses AI credits. The amount depends on how much work Max does.
    • If your brand theme is set up, click Generate.
    • If not, you see To get the best results, set up your brand theme in the AI Studio first. Click Go to AI Studio to set it up, or Continue with Design Settings to build from your current design settings.
  3. Wait while Max AI is building it. This takes about a minute. Max publishes the new menu and footer to your store, and they appear in the editor for you to fine-tune.

You can also simply ask Max in the chat, for example Build me a menu and footer. If you have unsaved changes, Create with Max AI waits until you save or publish (Save or publish your changes first.).

Step 3: Edit your menu and footer

Ask Max: type what you want, for example Add a link to my About Us page in the footer.

Edit it yourself:

  1. Click the Visual Editor button above the message box. Click your menu or footer in the preview to edit it.
  2. Click the menu or footer. The panel shows Menu links, Footer links or Social links.
  3. For each link, change the Text and the Destination (for example /about-us or https://example.com), and tick Open in new tab if you like.
  4. Drag a link to reorder it, or remove it. Click Add Menu Link, Add Footer Link or Add Social Link to add one.
  5. Change colors, fonts and spacing on the Style tab, as on any page. See How to Edit a Page in the Visual Editor.
  6. Click Save Changes in the panel.

Step 4: Publish your menu and footer

  1. At the top of the preview, click Save.
  2. Choose:
    • Publish and close: your menu and footer go live on every page, then the editor closes. The chat stays open.
    • Save Draft and close: saves your menu and footer without going live, then the editor closes.
  3. For Publish and close, confirm Publish menu and footer? (This updates the menu and footer on every page of your store.) by clicking Publish.
  4. The chat shows Your menu and footer are now live on every page of your store!

Heads up about drafts: publishing any page of your store also publishes the menu and footer as they are at that moment, including a saved draft.

If someone saved a newer version while you were working: Prosperna refuses the save once rather than writing over it. You see Not published: the menu moved (or Not saved: the menu moved), who saved which version and when, the version yours was built on, and Their version stays in History either way. Choose:

  • Publish mine (Save mine for a draft): send your version again, on top of theirs.
  • Load theirs: load the version they saved. Your unsaved changes to that part are dropped; everything else stays.
  • Cancel: change nothing and look first.

Step 4a: When someone else changes the menu or footer

Your menu and footer are shared by your whole store, so another browser tab, another Max AI chat, a page publish, a restore or a connected app such as Claude can change them while you have the editor open. Prosperna keeps your screen in step:

  • You have no unsaved changes to that part: the new version loads on its own and a note tells you what happened, for example Claude saved a draft of the menu (v1.1) at 10:05 AM. You're seeing it here. On a page, it adds Only the menu changed; your page edits stay.
  • You do have unsaved changes to that part: a window asks first. A new menu was just saved (or published) names who saved which version and when, and says You have menu changes here that aren't saved yet. Everything else you're working on is safe. Choose Keep my changes to carry on with yours, or Use the new menu to load theirs and drop your unsaved changes to that part only.
  • A Visual Editor save or an edit you approve in the chat changes the menu and footer everyone is looking at straight away, without making a new version. Other screens see Claude changed the menu at 10:05 AM. You're seeing it here. Not saved as a draft yet., or the question The menu was just changed if they have unsaved changes there. Only Save Draft and Publish make a new version.

Step 4b: Give your menu or footer a different look

Your menu and footer normally use your store default look. You can point either one at another saved look instead, so it keeps its own colors, fonts and button style.

  1. Open any page in the Max AI page builder.
  2. In the message-box menu next to Visual Editor, click Design Settings.
  3. In the Look drop-down at the top, choose the look you want.
  4. Under Use this look on, turn on the Menu switch, the Footer switch, or both. Each switch shows the look that part uses right now.
  5. The preview repaints so you can see it. The panel says Applying changes the menu or footer on every page.
  6. Click Apply. You see The menu and footer looks are saved.

To put a part back, turn its switch off and click Apply again.

Your menu and footer are the same on every page, so a look you apply to them shows on every page. See How to Save and Reuse Store Looks.

Step 5: Manage templates in the Template Library

  1. In the sidebar, click Page Builder, then Template Library.
  2. The table lists each template's Template Name, Template Type, Status, Applied To, Author (Max AI for templates Max built) and Last Modified date.
  3. If the library is empty, click Generate with AI (Built from your store details and design settings.). Each menu or footer is published as soon as it's ready, and you see a message such as Menu generated and published.
  4. If you have no published menu or footer, a banner offers Generate with AI. Click Dismiss to hide it.
  5. Click ... in the Actions column of a template:
    • View / Preview: see the template on your store.
    • Publish / Unpublish: unpublishing asks you to confirm (Unpublish Template).
    • Quick Edit: change the name and the pages it's applied to.
    • Edit: templates Max built open in the Menu and Footer editor. Other templates open in the classic editor in a new tab.
    • History (menu and footer templates Max built): see every kept version. See Step 5a.
    • Restore previous version (menu and footer templates Max built): bring back the version before the one you have now.
    • Trash, then Restore Template or Delete Permanently (type DELETE to confirm).
  6. To make a classic footer template yourself, click Add Template, enter a Template Name (up to 50 characters), choose Apply To (All Pages, Specific Pages or None), and click Create Template. Choosing All Pages replaces the footer template currently applied to every page.

Step 5a: Go back to an earlier menu or footer

A version is kept every time your menu or footer is saved as a draft or published, so you can always go back.

  1. In Template Library, click ... on your Max menu or footer, then History.
  2. Menu history (or Footer history) opens: Every version of the menu that was saved or published. Restoring one makes it a new draft; nothing goes live until you publish it. Each row shows the Version, the Section, the Kind (published or draft), By (who wrote it), At (when), Built on (the version it was built from) and Replaced (the version it took the place of after a refused save).
  3. The newest row reads current. Every other row has a Restore as draft button.
  4. Click Restore as draft. Confirm Restore menu v1.2 as a draft? (It becomes the next draft of your menu. Nothing goes live until you publish it from the Menu and Footer editor. Anyone with the menu open is told, and the version you have now stays in History.) by clicking Restore as draft again. The button reads Restoring... while it works.
  5. Open the Menu and Footer editor and publish it when you're ready.

Restore previous version in the same ... menu does the same thing for the row just below the current one, without opening the list.

Convert an old footer: if your published footer wasn't built with Max AI, a banner says Your footer was not built with Max AI. Click Convert with AI. You see Preview your new footer with Desktop and Mobile views. Click Publish to make it live, or Discard. Once the new footer is live, other published footers are unpublished. Nothing is deleted: you can republish them from the Template Library.

Step 6: Use the Menu Builder (stores created before May 28, 2026)

Older stores see Page Builder → Menu Builder. On newer stores this option is hidden, and opening it takes you to Max with Help me create a navigation menu for my online store.

  1. Click Page Builder → Menu Builder.
  2. Read the notice at the top:
    • Your store now shows your Max AI menu. Changes made here no longer appear on your store. Click Edit in Max Builder to edit the menu your customers see.
    • Convert your menu to Max AI. Max builds a new menu from your current links and store design. Click Convert with Max AI, check the preview, and publish it. Other published menus are then unpublished, and you can republish them from the Template Library.
  3. To keep using the old menu instead:
    • Pick Primary Menu or Secondary Menu on the left. Use the switch on each card to turn that menu on or off. When the primary menu is off: Off: your online store shows no primary menu bar. Your menu items are kept.
    • On the Menu Structure tab, add items from Page Links, Products, Categories, Subcategories, Custom Link, Custom Text, Store Information or Modal with Add to Menu. Under Functions, tick My Cart, Account Settings (Login) or Search Bar to show them, and choose each one's Item Position.
    • On the Menu Design tab, change how the menu looks. Check it under Menu Preview.
    • Click Save Changes. To switch to a different preset, choose it and click Apply Preset to Menu, then Apply. Click Create New Menu Preset to start a new one.

Set up the search bar: if Search Bar is ticked under Functions, open it and click Configure.

  1. On the Searchable Items tab, switch on what shoppers can search: Products (name, brand and description), Categories (name and description), Pages (title) and, if the Blogs app is activated, Blog (title and content). Click Save.
  2. On the Design Settings tab, set the Search Bar Width, the Search Button Color and Border Color, and the Font Family, Font Size, Font Weight and Font Color. Click Save.

Switch on at least one searchable item. Otherwise Save Changes shows Please configure the search settings first.

Add a pop-up window (Modal) to the menu:

  1. On the Menu Structure tab, open Modal and click Create New Modal.
  2. Enter a Modal Name and write the Modal Content. Use Device Preview to check it on desktop and mobile.
  3. Under Settings, choose whether to Display Modal on Mobile, the Desktop Modal Size and Mobile Modal Size, and the Background Color.
  4. Click Save (or Preview Modal to check it first, or Discard).
  5. Tick the modal in the Modal list and click Add to Menu, then click Save Changes.

To change or remove a saved modal, click the arrow next to its name, then Edit or Delete.

Delete a menu preset: choose the preset under Menu Presets and click the bin icon next to it, then click Delete. The bin only shows for a preset that your primary or secondary menu isn't using.

Verify It Worked

Success criteria:

  • The chat shows Your menu and footer are now live on every page of your store!
  • In Template Library, your menu and footer show the status Published.
  • Your online store shows the new menu and footer on every page.

Troubleshooting

Common errors

  • "Nothing to show yet. Ask Max to build your menu and footer.": your store has no menu or footer to edit yet. Use Create with Max AI or ask Max.
  • Create with Max AI is greyed out: Save or publish your changes first.
  • "This preview has expired. Convert again to build a new one.": click Convert with AI (or Convert with Max AI) again.
  • "N links from your old menu did not fit. You can add them in Max Builder.": the converted menu couldn't hold every old link. Add the missing ones in the Menu and Footer editor.
  • "Failed to open the menu and footer editor.": try again in a moment.
  • "Not published: the menu moved" or "Not saved: the menu moved": someone saved a newer version of that part while you were working. Choose Publish mine / Save mine, Load theirs, or Cancel. Nothing is lost either way: both versions stay in History.
  • "The menu's history could not be read. Close this and try again.": the version list didn't load. Close Menu history and open it again.
  • "No versions kept yet. A version is kept each time the menu is saved or published.": nothing has been saved or published for that part yet, so there's nothing to restore.
  • Changes in Menu Builder don't show on your store: your store shows your Max AI menu. Edit it in Max instead (Edit in Max Builder).

Limitations & considerations

  • Your menu and footer are shared by every page. Publishing them changes every page at once, and so does a look you apply to them.
  • A look your menu or footer uses can't be deleted until you move that part to another look.
  • Publishing any page also publishes your current menu and footer.
  • The Menu and Footer editor has no Insert tab.
  • A restored version always comes back as a draft. It never goes live until you publish it.
  • Only Save Draft and Publish create a version. Visual Editor saves and edits you approve in the chat change what everyone sees straight away, without creating one.
  • Building or converting a menu or footer with Max uses AI credits.
  • Menu Builder is only for stores created before May 28, 2026.
